Schwabentot (Swabian Gate) towards city

Freiburg Guided City Tours

City-Tour 5: "Old Town Special 1", incl. Freiburg Cathedral from outside and Schlossberg (Castle-Hill) with the "Schlossberg Railway".

Duration: Ca. 3,5 hours: My recommendation for fine weather

In addition to the tour "Old Town Complete" w'll go to the Schlossberg (Castle Hill) to one of my favourite places. We'll be rewarded with magnificent views of Freiburg, Freiburg Cathedral, the Rhine Valley, the Dreisamtal, Schönberg, the wine regions Tuniberg, Kaiserstuhl and Markgräflerland and - if the view is good - of the Vosges in nearby Alsace (France).

We comfortably climb the 73 metres in altitude from the lovely city-garden by "Schlossberg Railway" (photo) - an automated inclined lift - in only some 3 minutes.

From the mountain station we stroll for about 15 minutes on a pleasant, ground-level and well-developed forest path to one of my favourite places with wonderful views.

Freiburg's founders indulged in these breathtaking views. They had the "Burghaldenschloss" (castle) built on the Schlossberg more than 900 years ago.

From Kanonenplatz ("Canon Square") we will walk a steeper way to the "Schwabentor". This walk is not recommended for persons with mobility restrictions.
In this case it is recommended to use "Schlossberg Railway" downwards as well.

A separate ticket for the ride is required. Available at the valley station. One way 3,70€ per adult. Group reductions may apply (17th July
2026).

Freiburg Guided City Tours: The GOLD standard:

City-Tour 6: "Old Town Special 2, incl. Freiburg Cathedral outside and a view inside, Schlossberg (Castle-Hill) by "Schlossberg Railway".

Duration: Ca. 4 hours: My "gold-standard", recommended for fine weather

In addition to the tour before, you may have a look into Freiburg Cathedral (if possible).

Experience the effects of the light, the wonderful colored windows and simply the size of this cathedral, both from out- and from inside.

You may find specific Münster tours here, for example: https://www.c-punkt-freiburg.de
